Health Testing
A-Quality Beagles, Reg'd.
Over the years we have had many Beagles who have had health
problems, which can be heartbreaking. Since most Beagles end
up as pets at some point in their lives, we feel that health is very
important in the Beagle breed and strive to produce healthy
dogs who do not cause their owners sleepless nights or costly
vet bills.

We believe that all Beagles used for breeding should acquire a
CHIC number prior to breeding. The current requirements for a
Beagle to receive a CHIC number are:

  • OFA Hips or PennHip on or after 24 months of age
  • CERF Eyes on or after 12 months of age
  • MLS Test registered with OFA at any age
  • OFA Thyroid or OFA Cardiac on or after 12 months of age

Since the Hip exam must be done on or after 24 months of age,
we believe that no Beagle should be bred from prior to 24
months of age.

Some people will try to tell you that Beagles do not need to be
tested for genetically inherited diseases however, as of
December 2010 - here are the current OFA statistics for Beagles:
OFA Hips (1974-2010)
OFA Thyroid (1997-2010)
OFA Patella (1999-2010)
OFA Cardiac (1997-2010)
OFA BAER Hearing (2010)
OFA Degenerative Myelopathy (2010)
OFA Elbows (1996-2010)
OFA Pyruvate Kinase Deficiency (2006-2009)
OFA Spine (1993-2010)
OFA Factor VII Deficiency (2004-2010)
OFA Musladin-Lueke Syndrome (2009-Jan 2011)
**note: statistics not available for eye problems in Beagles**

Also note that these are only the results that have been
reported to the OFA! I'm sure there have been many Beagles
who did not pass their testing and owners who never sent the
results to the OFA for fear of their reputation.

As breeders and owners, we need to work together to breed
healthier Beagles without criticising others and report all results
to the OFA, if they are good or bad.

Due to the above statistics, we choose to test for OFA Hips,
OFA Thyroid, OFA Patellas, CERF Eyes, & OFA MLS.

We have started a database on our website for all the dogs
we have had tested:
