A-Quality Beagles, Reg'd

A-Quality Beagles is a small hobby kennel in rural South Carolina owned by Laura and Scott Short.
We breed to better the breed as a whole, every litter born here was bred with careful consideration of
the AKC Beagle breed standard; for health, temperament, & conformation. Although I have been
actively breeding beagles since 1992, I just recently applied for a registered kennel name. Due to the
common use of my previous prefix "Country Side" our name was changed to "A-Quality". As of
January 1st, 2006 there has never been a beagle registered with the prefix A-Quality, so every beagle
puppy whelped at my kennel that is registered after January 1st, 2006 will be registered with the new
prefix.

I began breeding non-registered hunting beagles in 1992 and through the years learned more and
more about the importance of good health, good temperament, & good conformation. I became very
interested in participating in events with my beagles and in 2002 I purchased my first AKC registered
beagle. Like most, my first beagle was a field-bred bitch with below average conformation, but she
was an excellent companion. I learned more and decided I wanted to better my breed and to do that I
needed to obtain better breeding stock.

As most of you know, it can be difficult establishing yourself as a beagle breeder and obtaining stock
out of good lines. In March 2004 I obtained my first show-bred beagles and was off to a great start.
With a few handling classes and some nice puppies I began winning in the show ring....unfortunely
this success was short lived.

My first couple of show-bred beagles had health problems, so I had them spayed/neutered and
placed them in wonderful pet homes. I contacted many breeders and finally obtained a few nice
bitches to begin with. I have learned from trial and error about the highs and lows of beagle breeding
and I believe that I have come out with alot of knowledge and experience to help me better the beagle
breed.

In early October 2007 I married Stuart Scott Short. Scott and I share a passion for breeding healthy,
happy, beautiful beagles who make good companions; whether for the home or the show ring.

Many beagle breeders recently have concentrated primarily on the conformation or working abilities
of their dogs with little or no concern for the health, longevity, and fertility of the bloodline of dogs
they are raising. I feel that health should be at the top of our list for improvement in beagle breeding
programs while not sacrificing conformation and tracking ability. We breed for the betterment of the
breed and to better our breeding program. We do not breed for profit and we keep the most suitable
pups from each litter to further our breeding program and the breeding programs of our fellow
